Great Tang: A Thousand-Year Clan Beginning at the Xuanwu Gate

On the fourth day of the sixth month in the ninth year of Wude, the Xuanwu Gate Incident erupted!

The Crown Prince was dead, and the cavalry of Prince of Qin Li Shimin was about to crush the remnants of the Eastern Palace.

Gu Changfeng, deputy commander of the Eastern Palace Guard, watched as his commander clutched the military tally and wept bitterly while preparing to order the entire army to surrender “for the sake of honor and the people.”

Gu Changfeng was furious.

“Li Shimin’s blade is already at your throat, and you’re preaching righteousness to me? If you want to die, don’t drag three thousand brothers down with you!”

[Thwack!]

Gu Changfeng struck, beheading his sanctimonious superior and forcibly taking command of the army!

Just as the troops erupted in uproar, a cold mechanical voice rang out in his mind:

“Ding! The Host has slain a ‘surrender faction’ child of fortune. The Eternal Aristocratic Clans System has awakened!”

“Congratulations, Host! You have received the beginner’s gift pack: ‘Western Chu Hegemon Xiang Yu Template, 100% Synchronization’!”

That day, armed with nothing but a halberd, Gu Changfeng did not charge into the Xuanwu Gate, where certain death awaited. Instead, he did the opposite and cut his way through Prince of Qin’s lightly guarded residence!

Drenched in blood, Gu Changfeng kicked open the door to the inner quarters of Prince of Qin’s residence and stared at the trembling household members.

When Li Shimin rushed over, eyes bloodshot with fury, Gu Changfeng greeted him with a benevolent smile:

“Your Highness, Prince of Qin. It’s been a while.”

“Now, let’s discuss the rules of this realm, and how much your wife and children’s lives are worth.”

Many years later, a saying circulated throughout the Great Tang: Emperors come and go, but the Gu family stands forever.

Li Shimin: “My greatest regret in this life is not keeping an eye on Gu Changfeng that day and letting him grow too powerful!”

The Five Surnames and Seven Clans: “How could we call ourselves aristocratic clans in front of the Gu family? We’re just their employees!”
