The story opens with the protagonist, Du Lingyi, transmigrating to a fantasy world, only to discover that he isn't the hot-blooded hero. He's the young master of the Du family, a villain who gets face-slapped by the protagonist, "Ye Han," in the very first chapter of the original story. Worse still, someone has planted a "Spirit-Devouring Gu" inside him, leaving him with only three days to live. Just as he despairs, he awakens the "Villain Self-Rescue System," only to learn that its function is to force him to maintain his "villain" persona in order to earn rewards. The conflict between "being a villain by role, yet harboring a righteous heart" becomes the story's central driving force.
