Alas!

The human heart is hard to fathom. The honest are few, the faithless many.

Yet spirits and monsters, flower sprites and fox fairies, often fall in love with a single thought, repaying kindness and keeping faith in equal measure.

By a twist of fate, they form a bond in this mortal world, their souls intertwined, sharing joy and sorrow.

Graceful beauties admire a scholar's talent and give him their hearts, whispering close and keeping him company day after day; a poor scholar chances upon a kindred beauty, their love deep and steadfast, and he forgets to go home.

Though they know they belong to different kinds, their hearts are as one. How could such sincere, passionate love compare to the ordinary bonds of marriage between mortals?

(Ahem... It's exactly what you're thinking!)
