Synopsis:
My surname is Zhang, the same Zhang as the Jade Emperor.
When I was twenty-three, my grandmother passed down three things to me: a book of feng shui and ritual techniques containing Buddhist, Daoist, heterodox, and folk traditions; a hundred-year-old talisman brush; a jade pendant that was a System; and these words: "Of all the causes and effects, you bear only one ten-thousandth. That is the key to keeping you alive."
I became a feng shui master with a built-in "burden-bearing" System. Cure someone's terminal illness, and I cough for three days. Help someone avert a disaster, and I suffer a spell of bad luck. Other people cultivate through talent. I level up by enduring one ten-thousandth of the backlash.
Then I figured out that what science cannot explain, the occult can; and what the occult cannot clarify, science can take a crack at.
From then on, I kept testing equipment beside my compass and mixed special materials into the cinnabar ink I used for talismans. I optimized feng shui formations with data models and treated "phantom illnesses" with modern medicine. I opened Cheng'an Consulting on an old street. In public, I read feng shui and offer consultations; behind the scenes, I drive out evil spirits and break curses. My business grew from finding a neighbor's cat to assessing properties for major corporations.
From little troubles in the countryside to urban mysteries, from business feuds to battles over the nation's destiny... With this "it's a blessing to take a loss" System, I forged a new path between science and the occult.
Some call me a misfit, an unorthodox cultivator, a "traitor to the mystic arts," and a "scientific charlatan."
Until the day the protective formation covering the entire city lit up because of me. Facing powerful foes who sought to steal the nation's destiny, I calmly said:
"Believe in science."
"And believe that at the end of science, I am still standing."
