The rain washed the palace walls until they were shiny, like a calm bronze mirror, reflecting the embarrassment everyone refused to admit. Shen Wanning held the silk and stood under the eaves, listening to the rain falling into the gaps in the green tiles, as if someone was gently sharpening a knife in the dark.
The lamp in the Gongxiu Department was very low, and the wick emitted a tiny flame, which made the needle cocoons on her fingertips turn white. That was not a medal for hard work, but more like a seal stamped by time - reminding her: the sharpest thing in the world is never a knife.
Someone hurriedly broke in, breathing with the smell of fire and ashes: "The accounting room... The accounting room is burned down!"
For a moment, the air seemed to be clenched tightly.
She raised her eyes and met a pair of eyes that were so cold that they were almost heartless. The man was covered with rain, and water was still dripping from the corners of his clothes, but he looked like a sword that refused to be sheathed.
"Shen Wanning?" When he read her name, his tone sounded like he was naming a case.
She didn't kneel, she just hugged the silk tighter, and her voice was very soft, but she didn't retreat: "It's me."
His eyes fell on the ink stains on her fingertips, as if he saw some evidence that shouldn't exist.
"Your hands," he said slowly, "have you ever embroidered flowers or words?"
The flame of the lamp jumped, and her heart also jumped. But she still raised her head, with rain and bones in her eyes:
"Embroidering is work, and embroidering calligraphy is life. Which one do you want me to hand over, sir?"
