Han Peng, a modern-day overworked office drone and history student, stays up late studying the script for The Pretender before a sudden accident transports his soul into Ming Lou, just before the story begins. Ming Lou has just returned from France and has yet to officially join the new government. Wang Manchun is still obsessively pursuing him, and the Ming siblings' elaborate cover is not yet fully in place. Armed with complete knowledge of the plot, Han Peng must maintain Ming Lou's perfect persona as a “triple agent,” make up for the original story's regrets, and avert its tragic ending amid Shanghai's treacherous world of espionage. At the same time, he must face the Ming family's scrutiny and prove himself worthy of their trust.
