In the winter of 1942, two months after the French Concession in Shanghai was taken over by the Japanese army, Shen Yanzhi, the general manager of Yuchang Matheson Company, had just wiped off the "traitor" graffiti on the door wall - a humiliating normal condition for pseudo-officers.
