Watching the new students arrive at this supposedly safe school one by one, Gu Zhixiao remembered how, on a dark and stormy night at the start of her first year of high school, some mysterious senior who had already graduated conned her out of fifty yuan. She still hadn't forgotten it. Now a sophomore, Gu Zhixiao had figured out how to make money. She grabbed a megaphone and went to advertise near the school gates.
“I'm a pro at comedy and humor. For just ten yuan, I'll help you with anything!”
The megaphone and the sign drew all sorts of underclassmen over to watch. The vice president, Shen Shimian, spotted Gu Zhixiao as she quietly crept up behind her.
“Hey, junior, want to hire me? Ten yuan a go. I don't do business at a loss.”
“Gu Zhixiao, you'll lose points for doing business at school.”
Hearing someone call her name, Gu Zhixiao turned around. She hadn't expected it to be Shen Shimian. After a quick glance, she grabbed the megaphone and hurried off.
It wasn't until after the college entrance exams that...
Gu Zhixiao saw Shen Shimian sitting beneath a tree from the second floor. A while later, she left the school. At the class party, their homeroom teacher told everyone that Shen Shimian was going to study at a university in England after the exams. Only then did Gu Zhixiao remember that she'd be going abroad.
Shen Shimian got into Hope University and spent a year traveling abroad.
Gu Zhixiao's score wasn't high enough, so she inherited a sesame flatbread stall and started selling outside the university gates.
The two met again the following winter, when Shen Shimian came across Gu Zhixiao selling flatbreads.
“Why are you here outside Hope University on a snowy day?”
“There's a big crowd, so I came to sell flatbreads.”
“So, have you made up your mind?”
“Help me sell all these flatbreads, and I'll tell you.”
“You said it.”
And so their story began, opening the door to a happy life together.
