The afternoon sun streams through the window of KO One at Bali High School, a window that never seems to get clean, illuminating countless specks of dust swirling in the air. The classroom is filled with a heady mix of sweaty teenage energy, cheap hair gel, and hormones that could explode at any moment. In the window seat at the back, the new transfer student, Lin An, props up his chin and gazes blankly at an old banyan tree outside, half of it struck by lightning.
In his ears, Jin Baosan, the flamboyant sissy in the row ahead, chatters on and on, punctuated by occasional minor surges of battle power, usually ending with some unlucky kid getting hit in the forehead by a textbook or an eraser. At the lectern, homeroom teacher Tian Xin explains a math problem in a voice so sweet it’s almost cloying. To these students, it might as well be gibberish, and it earns her a classroom full of evenly spaced, deliberately muffled snores.
