In a time when giant forests of glowing mushrooms covered the world, all of humanity shared dreams through a network of mycelium. Silas Weir, the top dream architect, has an enviable immortality, but he has long been tired of eternity after hundreds of years of repetition. The only thing he longs for is to find a way to end his consciousness. When an uncontrollable recurring dream invades him and threatens to grow into reality, he finds himself summoned by the heart of an ancient, rotting tree. This heart of the tree is the remnant of a previous civilization's resistance to the "Mother Dream" - a collective unconscious intent on swallowing up all individual consciousnesses and merging them into a single hive mind. In pursuit of his ultimate personal rest, Silas had to go deep into the abyss of dreams, only to find that the answer he sought was related to whether the entire civilization should maintain independence and freedom of life and death, or fall into eternal assimilation. He must use his lifelong dream-making skills to weave an ultimate dream that will allow all mankind to "wake up" and "forget", at the cost of the real end he dreams of.
