Before Liberation, Jiang Defu (Guo Tao) and An Jie (Mei Ting) would have seemed like two people with nothing in common. He was a young, promising, capable and decisive naval officer, while she was a pampered, charming, elegant daughter of a capitalist family. But the sweeping changes of the 1950s brought them together. Jiang Defu met the beautiful An Jie at a dance. Though he was brash, illiterate, and rough around the edges, after a few twists and turns they finally formed a small family despite their mismatched class backgrounds.
