This is the story of Chen Mo, an entrepreneur who falls from business success into the abyss after being betrayed by his partner. Bankruptcy, divorce, and losing custody of his daughter drive him into the criminal mire of an underground casino. After witnessing a gambler jump to his death, Chen Mo suffers a mental breakdown and eventually goes to prison for a crime.
During his years behind bars, his daughter Niannian’s innocent letters and visits become a glimmer of light in his dark life. After his release, branded an ex-con, Chen Mo takes a dangerous job cleaning the outsides of high-rise buildings. He struggles to survive amid social prejudice and the torment of old wounds. When fate places his daughter back in his care, the two of them rely on each other in a rundown rented room.
This is a story about a corroded reality and the faint glimmer of humanity. The law can pass judgment on a crime, but it cannot measure the weight of redemption. On the coldest margins of society, a bowl of sweet strawberry ice jelly and the resilience of a safety rope help a father and daughter weave a net in the cracks, one that can catch each other when they fall.
It looks good. I love watching it. I want to watch it again.
