Chongzhen Reborn: Defying the Age and Restoring the Light

In 1664, Beijing fell to Li Zicheng, and Emperor Chongzhen hanged himself on Coal Hill. In his despair, this fallen ruler glimpsed three hundred years of upheaval to come. Reborn on the day of his accession, he carries the painful lessons of history and the shock of witnessing civilization’s transformation. He is no longer the tragic emperor, isolated and unable to hold the dynasty together, but an awakened man holding the secrets of heaven. With the perspective of modern civilization, he examines the Ming dynasty’s deep-rooted ills. With an iron hand, he reshapes the order of the realm. This is an attempt to defy fate and change both one man’s destiny and the fortunes of a dynasty, and a tragic effort to transform a feudal empire into a modern state while standing at the brink of ruin.
