(A work of fiction) In the early years of the Republic of China, warlords carved up the country as foreign powers closed in. Marshal Ma of the North held sway beyond the passes, commanding a powerful army. He and the revolutionary forces in the south, along with rival warlords, fought both openly and in the shadows. The land was ravaged by war, and the people were plunged into misery. A son of a military family struggles to grow amid the chaos, through the War of Resistance and the civil war, facing difficult choices between loyalty and filial duty, family and country, and faith. The chaotic age is a blazing furnace: it tempers the human heart and forges heroes.
