In the planetary age, humanity breaks free from the shackles of energy, only to become embroiled in a fierce struggle between development and ecology. In the stellar age, Dyson megastructures encircle the sun, and beneath the dawn of limitless energy, the shadows of social inequality and the ethics of life grow longer. Then, in the galactic age, civilization's fingertips reach the singularity of a black hole, and those who wield ultimate power must answer this question: will they become lonely gods in the universe, or gentle guardians of the myriad forms of life?

At the heart of this chronicle is a “balancer,” or perhaps a group of them, chosen by history. They are not omniscient deities, but engineers, philosophers, or lawmakers who understand both technology and ethics. At the brink of every leap in civilization, when the old order teeters on collapse and new technology carries immense risks, they must step forward. Their weapons are not planet-destroying cannons, but ingenious institutional design, forward-looking ecological assessments, and profound insight into human nature. Their mission is to guide civilization toward a dynamic and resilient balance between the particle nature of “light” (concentrated, efficient, powerful) and its wave nature (inclusive, equitable, connected).
