He often wears a golden mask when leaving the palace on business. By chance, he saves Ye Shuying, who was sold by her parents to the Yihong Brothel, and later helps you fight off bandits in an alley. Ye Shuying falls in love with him at first sight. To get close to him, she finds a way to enter the palace as a maid or guard.

Beneath a crabapple tree at a palace banquet, Ye Shuying recognizes his eyes and confesses her love. Cao Chengyin takes out his golden mask and runs his fingers over it, coldly telling her, “I'm a eunuch. I can't give you happiness.”
