Li Yang, a thirty-year-old web novelist, was hunched over his desk writing Chongming when his emotions got the better of him and he took a fast-acting heart pill. Memories of a car accident from sixteen years earlier, buried deep in his mind, came flooding back. Outside a rundown internet cafe, he had watched a girl get hit by a car, then fled in panic. The guilt had become an obsession.
That memory unexpectedly became a bond, intertwining his life with that of the girl, Zhang Lingling. He watched Zhang Lingling make her mark in the world of DNF, carrying that extraordinary memory with her. Meanwhile, fourteen-year-old Li Yang and his friends started out running errands for an internet cafe, seizing control of a delivery channel to carve out their first foothold.
From the bottom-rung struggles of stockpiling goods, account boosting, and stirring up hype to sell equipment, to joining Zhang Lingling on the professional DNF stage; from losing in the national quarterfinals to the championship frenzy that brought down the Galaxy Battleship, they set their youthful passion alight with esports.
But capital would eventually bare its fangs, and the fans’ faces would quietly change. In the glory of reaching the summit, all that remained was the coldness of reality.
After retiring, Li Yang returned to his desk to finish writing Chongming, while Zhang Lingling traveled far and wide, seeing the world’s joys and sorrows. Their paths crossed, then parted. In the end, each of them lived the life they wanted.
