Lin Xiulian, a returned overseas Chinese girl from Southeast Asia, returned to her hometown of overseas Chinese in Fujian and opened a girls' school. She met Chen Wanghai, a local young teacher, who supported Xiulian's education career. In the process of promoting the new learning, the two were opposed by conservative forces and faced the threat of Japanese invasion.
