During the Guangxu period of the late Qing Dynasty, Li Tongyao, a young man at Zhenbaoxuan in Liulichang, was awarded the "Chen Family Appraisal of Treasures" because he often helped the fortune teller Chen Xiazi. He secretly studied the art of treasure appraisal, and gradually grew up while dealing with the jealousy of his senior brothers, scams by antique dealers and other disturbances. He stuck to his heart to protect lost cultural relics, and eventually transformed from an ignorant boy to a well-known treasure appraiser in Liulichang.
