Yu Yuan had spent over a decade as a palace maid. At long last, she was old enough to leave the palace, but out of nowhere, she started “hearing things.”
"If you serve this dish, that damn emperor is as good as dead!"
Yu Yuan shuddered. If the emperor died, she’d be buried with him!
“Y-Your Majesty, this food seems to have gone bad!”
She was going to have her wages docked. Still, that was better than losing her head!
And so the little palace maid began a chaotic career of saving the emperor’s life:
Assassin: "Just get him to drink this Dreamdrunk Tea, and we’ll be halfway to victory!"
Yu Yuan: “Ahhh! Your Majesty, this servant’s hand slipped!”
Assassin: "One more step, and today will be that damn emperor’s last day. Heh heh heh!"
Yu Yuan: “Your Majesty, the road ahead is blocked!”
While she busied herself saving that damn emperor’s life, he sat there with a stern face, roasting her furiously in his thoughts:
"The maids these days are hopeless. She can’t even hold a teacup steady. What on earth is the Palace Attendants Bureau doing?"
"Tsk, she’s sneaking a look at me again. She must be plotting something!"
"Wait, this maid always shows up when I’m in danger. She must be madly in love with me!"
Yu Yuan silently rolled her eyes. I’m not saving your life, old lady’s saving her retirement fund!
Just as she finally scraped together her private savings and prepared to leave the palace, the Marchioness came looking for her, claiming they were family.
After much agonizing, she realized a young lady of a marquis’s household couldn’t very well refuse to marry...
The damn emperor coughed softly, his ears turning red. “Since you’ll have to marry someone anyway, why not become my empress...”
She looked at him warily.
He hastily added, “Your monthly allowance will be a hundred times higher, you’ll have an entire palace to yourself, and you’ll ride in a phoenix carriage whenever you go out!”
Her eyes lit up. Money has always been hard to resist. Perhaps she should stay...?
The plot is a bit clichéd, and the characters and actions are a bit thin and childish, but the overall writing is very smooth and good [send my heart] [send my heart] [send my heart]. I hope that the subsequent characters and events will be more fleshed out.
Five stars! The subject matter is novel, the characters are likeable, and the writing is powerful. I haven't seen a short article that can be rated as five stars in a long time!
