It was like an electric current coursing through his cerebral cortex, or the harsh static of an old radio being tuned. This strange noise had appeared once every hour, right on schedule, ever since he first woke from a deep sleep a week ago. Each episode lasted several seconds, yet the doctors said his hearing was perfectly normal.
