The Hidden Mountain Token

New-School Literary Wuxia | A Brooding Political Epic | An Ensemble Cast in Classic Fantasy

[Reading Guide] A slow-burn story with long-running foreshadowing and a mix of classical and vernacular prose. Recommended for readers who enjoy the style of Sword Snow Stride and Sword of Coming. Readers looking for a fast-paced power fantasy may want to steer clear. New-school wuxia fantasy + classical political intrigue + world-building + one devoted romance. The literary-minded version: “If you love the jianghu atmosphere of Sword Snow Stride and the political machinations of Nirvana in Fire, but wish they had more fantasy, this is the book for you.”

· For power-fantasy readers: “It’s not mindless wish fulfillment. It’s the kind that leaves you savoring the thrill long after the high wears off.”

Shanhai Pass falls, and the blood of thirty-seven generations of a military family is tempered into one final broken blade.

When I take it in my hand, what brands my palm is not rust,

but three hundred years of a dynasty’s chronic ailments, and the cracks spanning ninety thousand li of mountains and rivers that still need mending.

The wastrel in everyone’s eyes insists on wielding this broken blade,

to write a new prescription for heaven and earth,

to carve out chaos within the mind, move mountains, fill seas, and nurture a vast and righteous world.

In this corrupt mortal realm, I use political intrigue as my catalyst and the jianghu as my furnace, to forge an age of peace.

The Northern Mang cavalry presses at the border? Then I’ll use my own spine to rebuild the frontier walls.

Rotten officials are hollowing out the nation? Then this blade will scrape the poison from the bone.

Heaven treats all living things like straw dogs?

Then I’ll

make myself the scales, and weigh whether the Heavenly Way can outweigh the warmth of human life.

Later, as I stand atop the Heavenly Gate, a celestial voice asks,

“The road to immortality is near. Why not return?”

I look back along the road I came by.

The fires of war have gone out at the passes, smoke rises anew from village chimneys,

and among the children reciting their lessons at school, I hear the old soldiers’ song my father once sang.

I suddenly burst out laughing, straighten my clothes, and turn away.

“These green mountains are my Penglai. Why seek an immortal’s boat beyond the clouds?”
