After the "Great Silence", the world was divided into the safe "Photosynthetic City" and the "Silent Zone" occupied by "shadows". Humanity's survival relies on a spiritual barrier called a "mental anchor" to resist invisible monsters that can distort the senses and parasitize cognition.
Cheng Han, a scavenger who makes a living by picking up garbage on the edge of the "Quiet Zone", his biggest dream is to save enough money to buy a pigeon cage with artificial sunlight windows in Photosynthetic City. He is talkative, caressing his life, and can always say the most cowardly words in the meanest tone.
Until an accident, he picked up a piece of "trash" that could not be valued or understood.
That thing, like a piece of solid darkness, not only failed to be filtered by his "mental anchor", but made his world become more "real" than ever before - so real that he could clearly see the "shadows" entrenched in the corners of the city and lurking in the gaps of people's hearts, and how they weaved reality into a huge lie.
Trouble ensues. The official organization that wants to recycle the "garbage", the mysterious fanatic believers who regard him as a heretic, and the "inhuman" neighbors whose disguise he has seen through... The whole world wants him to shut up, or make him "disappear".
In order to survive and to understand what he saw, Cheng Han was forced to embark on a road of no return. He will use his own way to fight against this bizarre and crumbling world.
"Don't get me wrong," Cheng Han fled in embarrassment while raising his middle finger at the monsters and pursuers behind him. "I'm not a hero. I just want to find out who's pocket has gone into the IQ tax I've paid for so many years?"
