In the Daqian Dynasty, humans and gods co-governed. There were gods overlooking the sky, and in the world there were intertwined imperial powers and spiritual sects. The Lantern Commander, an organization that handles "dirty work" for the royal family, walks in the shadows, and Xu Zhihu is the most inconspicuous Lantern Commander in the shadows. He is lazy, greedy for money, and a drunkard. In the eyes of his colleagues, he is a loser who relies on the shadow of his ancestors to get by. No one knew that the dim lantern he held every night illuminated not only the dark alleys of Chang'an City, but also the cracks leading to another strange world. When the gods decreed that millions of people in Chang'an should be sacrificed, everyone chose to kneel down. Only Xu Zhihu, who was usually the most unseemly person, walked up the stairs to the sky with his rusty sword. He smiled and said to the gods and Buddhas in the sky: "The lantern holder is doing his work, and the gods have to give way."
