When the knock on the door at midnight is no longer a neighbor, when the reflection in the mirror begins to blink, when the last words of the missing person are "Don't believe in the shadow" - the "614 Group" affiliated with the Special Incident Processing Center is closing its net in the shadow of this city.
Lin Qiu, a forensic doctor who can read the past from the remnants of spiritual bodies, was accidentally involved in a series of "shadow disappearance cases" and was forced to join the legendary 614 Group that only existed in internal documents. The members here all have "some problems": team leader Zhou Ye always talks into the air, technician Su Rui can talk to electronic devices, and the mysterious man who always wears a black trench coat is said to be able to summon the past obsession at midnight.
The cases they handle are never reported, and the file numbers start with "supernatural": the bride in red tries on the dress repeatedly in the bridal shop, but it is actually an unfinished wedding five years ago; the clock in the old watch shop turns upside down every three o'clock, trapping a watch repairman who doesn't want to leave; and the shadow case that brings Lin Qiu into the case - the last images of all the missing people have a shadow exactly like himself standing behind them.
"What we are dealing with is not a case, but an obsession that didn't have time to say goodbye." Zhou Ye lit a cigarette and looked out the window at the night sky dyed blue by neon lights. "But the rules of Group 614 are: don't look back, don't empathize, and don't let yourself become the name in the next file."
But Lin Qiu didn't know that every spiritual remnant she touched was quietly piecing together an erasure of her own past. And those obsessions she saved will eventually become the blade - or armor - that bites her back.
