The Bahe River, a tributary of the Weihe River, a tributary of the Yellow River, was named Zishui in ancient times. It has a total length of 109 kilometers and a drainage area of 2,581 square kilometers. It originates from the north of Majiapo, Bayuan Town, Lantian County, on the northern slope of the Qinling Mountains. It is formed by the convergence of four source streams, Qingyu, Liuyu, Tongyu and Daogouyu. These sources were called Bahe River after they were merged in Yushan Town. It flows through Baqiao District and Weiyang District, and merges into the Wei River between Weiyang and Baqiao Districts in Xi'an City. During the Spring and Autumn Period, Qin Mugong continued to expand outwards and changed its name to Bashui after dominating Xirong. Later, three dots of water were added next to the word "Ba" and it was called Bashui. The main tributaries include Wangyu River, Chan River, etc. The riverbed in the upper reaches of the Bahe River has a large drop rate. During the flood period, the water flow is turbulent, the riverbed swings left and right, and the river channel has many bends. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, a relatively complete embankment system was built.
The Bahe River basin has developed agriculture and a long history of irrigation. There are many water diversion projects built in the basin such as Wangba Canal, Yuejin Canal, Lanqiao Canal, Puhui Canal, Bahui Canal, Tuanjie Canal, and Lixin Canal.
The Bahe River Basin has profound historical and cultural heritage. The Banpo ruins, Baqiao ruins and Laoniupo ruins along the coast have laid the foundation for the construction of the Bahe Cultural Belt. The Lantian ape-man ruins were discovered in the upper reaches of the Bahe River.
