Navy Blue Cloth

Deep in Mopan Mountain in western Hunan lies Damaoling, a Miao village. As children, Li Musen and Mo Wushuang, the daughter of immigrants, relied on each other. A dark blue cloth sash became the keepsake that marked the first stirrings of their love. On the day of the village fair, Chu Tianming, a young man from the local gentry’s Chu family, violated Mo Wushuang. Heartbroken, she hanged herself. Li Musen’s father, Li Zhongfeng, was roasted alive under the sun by the authorities while seeking justice for her. Bearing a blood feud, Li Musen fled the mountains as a rough young man and went to study martial arts at the Guizhou Military Academy. He endured warlord conflicts, became a bandit, and ultimately led his men to fight the Japanese before going to Korea to serve in battle. Through a lifetime of unyielding resolve, he transformed from seeking “personal revenge” to “protecting his homeland and country.” The dark blue cloth remained his spiritual anchor, binding together his longing for his beloved, his attachment to his home, and his commitment to protecting ordinary people.
