Lin Shuai, a man from a rural area in northern Anhui Province, suffered an accident that left hideous scars on his face. His wife abandoned him in a desperate situation, leaving behind only an elderly father, a young daughter, and a broken shack that always leaks when it rains. In order to support this precarious family, he left his hometown to work odd jobs on construction sites, carrying the family's livelihood on his rough shoulders.
