Stories of the War Against Japan: Remembering History

This epic offers a sweeping portrait of the Chinese nation’s fourteen-year War of Resistance Against Japan. Rather than simply listing historical facts about the war, it places people at its heart, bringing together every story of resistance scattered across the land of China between the September 18 Incident of 1931 and Japan’s surrender in 1945. It captures the soldiers’ fiery struggles amid the gunfire at classic battles such as the victory at Pingxingguan, the Battle of Taierzhuang, and the Hundred Regiments Offensive. It also recounts the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army’s arduous guerrilla campaigns through forests and snowy plains, the ingenuity of villagers in central Hebei who dug tunnels to repel the enemy, and the quiet perseverance of ordinary people: overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia donating money and supplies, students marching through the streets of Beiping, and a teahouse owner in Jiangnan risking his life to deliver intelligence to the guerrillas.
