Devouring cultivation + modern paranormal + immortal cultivation + high-octane battles
Luo Chen, a college dropout crushed by debt, works as a security guard at Jing'an Temple subway station in Magic City. He had planned to coast through life, but a vengeful ghost kills him during a night shift.
After coming back from the dead, he awakens memories of his past life: he was the last Guardian of the Boundary, guarding a rift into the spirit realm for a thousand years before falling in battle. His golden finger, the Heavenly Secrets Disk, brought him back through reincarnation, but he has only 3% of his life force left and less than three years to live.
If he wants to survive, he has to eat ghosts!
From subway specters to vengeful elevator spirits, from becoming an internet sensation by livestreaming ghost hunts to being recruited by Lu Xuening, the beautiful director of the Special Investigations Bureau, Luo Chen discovers that the modern city is even more dangerous than the spirit realm. The cool, commanding police chief, his childhood friend Su Wanqing, who turns out to have a Profound Yin constitution, and Ye Xiaoman, the money-loving heiress of a tomb-raiding family, all want to keep him as their boy toy.
Devouring spirit cores unlocks techniques and extends his life; solving cases earns merit and makes him stronger. As Luo Chen grumbles that "cultivating immortality is still worse than delivering takeout," he builds the Luo Tian Pavilion, recruits children with spiritual roots, and takes on the spirit-realm cult. But when he obtains his past life's sword, the Luo Tian Sword, and discovers that a Heavenly Demon is parasitizing his body, Luo Chen is stunned to realize that the truth behind the Guardians' downfall a thousand years ago is hidden inside him!
When the Kunlun rift opens and people with Profound Yin constitutions around the world become sacrifices, Luo Chen must find a seventh path between "devouring everything and becoming a demon" and "giving up all his cultivation to protect the world"!
