The story follows Lin Mo, a cultivator who fails his tribulation and is reborn as a mortal, only to become entangled in a conspiracy spanning a thousand years. On the surface, he is an ordinary tenant in a teahouse in the old district. In truth, he bears the mission of stopping the Shadow Pavilion from opening the forbidden land known as the Ruins. As he searches for the truth, he meets Liu Ruyan, a Daoist heir carrying on her master’s legacy, and protects Lin Xiaowan, a girl with a Pure Yang destiny who can see spirits. He also discovers that those around him, from the seemingly ordinary teahouse owner to the mountain guardian, are all connected to the conspiracy in countless ways.
From the sinister energy in an abandoned mine, to a broken stele from the world-crossing array at Qingxuan Temple, to the Yin-gathering array beneath the old district, Lin Mo gradually uncovers the secret of the Ruins: they are not a place beyond the world, but the world’s shadow, devouring everything. The Shadow Pavilion will sacrifice living souls to claim the power within the Ruins, and Lin Mo is the “chosen one” foretold to seal its gates. Armed with three tokens, the Spirit-Suppressing Pendant, the Kun Position Token, and the Essence of Li Fire, he faces off against the Shadow Pavilion’s bronze-masked men and other factions in one deadly clash after another, while also confronting the sacrifices and betrayals of those around him.
This is a struggle between mortal flesh and supernatural evil, as well as a journey of cultivation about protection and redemption. When the total lunar eclipse arrives and the gate to the Ruins at the heart of the earth’s veins is about to open, Lin Mo must choose between sacrifice and standing firm. With his remaining spiritual power and unbreakable Dao heart, he must shield the world from being consumed by the shadows.
