Chen Guan transmigrates into the Great Yin Dynasty, where demons and monsters run rampant, and becomes a low-ranking clerk in the Demon-Suppression Bureau. In a world watched by the Nether Capital and plagued by unruly spirits, all he wants is to keep his head down and slack off. Then, by chance, he finds a stunning young woman with amnesia in an abandoned storehouse.
She seems so ethereal that she is untouched by worldly concerns. With a casual point of her finger, even the fiercest demons vanish into dust. Chen Guan thinks he has found himself a powerful bodyguard, until she severs one of her tails to mend a tear in the world and falls into a deep sleep. Only then does he realize she is none other than Su Daji, the nine-tailed fox from legend who brought chaos to the Shang Dynasty!
At the same time, the Celestial Patrol Record recognizes its master, and an ancient covenant awakens. A hidden mastermind manipulates the Nether Capital, seeking to devour this world with the "Key of Eternal Darkness." The court is riddled with sinister forces, the dragon energy of the land's veins is being stolen, and the realm teeters on the brink of collapse.
To awaken her, Chen Guan sets out in search of Qingqiu's ancestral lands and the source of creation. Wielding the Celestial Patrol Record and bearing the duty of a Celestial Patrol Envoy, he seals the gates of the Nether Capital and quells calamities across the land.
In the Southern Border, corpse Gu infest the insect valleys. In the North, eternal night devours all living things. In the Western Wastes, shadows stir in an ancient city. In the Eastern Sea, a black tide sweeps over immortal islands... Fighting alongside the awakened Su Jiu'er, he gradually uncovers the ancient secrets of the Investiture of the Gods and faces the otherworldly mastermind manipulating fate and karma.
This is a fated reunion between a Celestial Patrol Envoy and a fox of Qingqiu, and a grand war for the survival of humankind. When eternal darkness descends, he will become a candle, rekindling the sacred flame of the Celestial Patrol for her, and for all of humanity!
