Chen Mo is an unknown assassin on the outskirts of East China Base City, with a singular obsession: practicing swordsmanship. His sword has no flashy moves, only speed, precision, and ruthlessness, the survival instincts honed in a mountain of corpses and sea of blood. No one knows why he's so devoted to cold weapons. They only know that he practices in the ruins late at night, his sword flashing like a cold star and reflecting the loneliness in his eyes.
During the third beast tide, he is ordered to escort a research team to safety, but they are surrounded by king-level monsters at a gorge pass. With their ammunition exhausted and supplies gone, a monster's tail spike pierces his chest. In agony, he watches the transport plane about to be destroyed, then turns his sword against himself and drives it into his own heart. He would rather die by his own blade than become monster feed.
Yet, as his consciousness fades, the ancient sword that has been with him for years suddenly glows dimly. Its ancient markings merge with his blood, and an unfamiliar power surges through his body. When he opens his eyes again, his wounds have healed. It is as if a furnace has appeared inside him, one that can devour metal and turn it to his own use. His swordsmanship has also improved.
Everyone believes Chen Mo died in the beast tide, including those who once knew him. But from that day on, a silent guardian appears in the shadows of Base City. Whenever high-level monsters break through the defenses, a flash of sword light, too fast to be more than a blur, cuts through the air, and their heads hit the ground. When a convoy is ambushed, metal shards on the ground suddenly transform into blades and drive back the enemy.
