Gobi winds and sandstorms swept over the Mogao Caves, while thousand-year-old murals blistered, cracked, and lost their color. Chen Yan set off for Dunhuang with a restoration team, fighting the ravages of time with the skill of his hands. From emergency treatment for blistered paint to restoring the original colors, they completed the ribbons of damaged flying apsaras amid the sandstorms and brought a golden glow back to the faded sutra illustrations. Along the way, they uncovered the thousand-year-old stories and the original spirit of devotion hidden behind the restoration of the Dunhuang murals.
