The story of Shen Nianchu and Lu Tingyuan begins with unrequited love and ends in a broken marriage. At its heart lies a heartrending urban romance about missed chances and redemption.
The youth of Shen Nianchu, a gifted art student, was filled with the shadow of Lu Tingyuan. The white shirt he wore in the library, his figure on the basketball court: she quietly painted them in her sketchbook and kept them hidden in her diary. As her family fell into ruin, she clung to her last hope to save her gravely ill younger brother and entered the Lu family through an arranged marriage, only to find herself caught in a carefully woven winter. Lu Tingyuan, a tycoon’s heir surrounded by an aura of prestige, distrusted “sincerity” because of childhood trauma and saw her advances as scheming. He tore up her paintings, trampled her dignity, and turned away when she needed him most, while the schemes of his ex, Su Manqi, tightened the knot of misunderstanding around them.
When Shen Nianchu’s unrequited love was ground to ashes, she left with the words, “Loving you used up all my courage.” She walked away, scarred but resolute. Only when the villa no longer held the scent of the coffee she used to make warm, and the studio contained nothing but shattered frames, did Lu Tingyuan begin to glimpse, in the pages of her diary and in the few words others let slip, the deep affection he had ignored. The truth struck like thunder. Regret gnawed at his soul, and he began desperately trying to win her back, only to discover that the girl who once looked at him as if he were her whole world had grown into an independent woman, with no trace of emotion left in her eyes.
The story also features Xia Zhi, her best friend, guarding her like “armor”; Gu Yanzhi, offering restrained companionship; and Su Mingyu, awakening to his guilt. Like stars surrounding them, they illuminate the protagonists’ struggles and growth. In this long-delayed redemption, can the faint light among the ashes be rekindled? The answer lies in Shen Nianchu turning away
