In the spring of the 26th year of the Republic of China, Huangpu Military Academy student Shen Yichen and Jinling female student Lin Ruoqing met in Nanjing in the fragrance of "New Youth". When the war broke out, Shen Yichen gave up studying abroad, donned the bronze whistle he wore during his student army days and rushed to the front line. When leaving, Lin Ruoqing stuffed the white silk handkerchief embroidered with lotus flowers into the inner pocket of his military uniform - the handkerchief concealed the military command code. These two tokens have since affected the destiny in troubled times.
When Shen Yichen moved to the Kunlun Pass, Lin Ruoqing moved west to Chongqing with the school and reunited with Zhang Hanqing, the military translator and telegraph officer. Zhang Hanqing was actually a Japanese spy and deliberately approached to obtain the password. In order to deliver false information, Lin Ruoqing pretended to deal with it, and gradually neglected to respond to Shen Yichen's letters.
On the Lantern Festival in the 29th year of the Republic of China, at an engagement party in Chongqing, Shen Yichen, who had returned from injury, broke into the scene and saw Lin Ruoqing and Zhang Hanqing standing side by side. A gunshot rang out suddenly in the chaos, and Lin Ruoqing thrust the copper whistle back into his hand - the wax seal had melted, suggesting that the truth could be revealed. Shen Yichen later discovered that Zhang Hanqing had communicated with the enemy and understood Lin Ruoqing's painstaking efforts in pretending to betray him.
In turbulent times, personal love and the righteousness of family and country are inextricably intertwined. Shen Yichen finally chose to remain silent and bury the past in time.
In the 38th year of the Republic of China, Shen Yichen, who was already a middle school teacher, told the story of the Battle of Kunlun Pass in Peiping. When a student asked about the story of the copper whistle in the photo, he only smiled slightly:
"That's a promise about waiting."
The ginkgo leaves outside the window are falling, just like the cherry blossoms in Jinling back then.
