When the realm was still unsettled, the Wen family had a son who became sworn brothers with the eldest son of the Huo family and the only son of the Mu family. They supported one another and fought their way to victory. Later, the Wen son ascended the throne as emperor, while Huo Chong of the Huo family and Mu Shanhe of the Mu family became generals and helped secure his empire.

The Mu family had a daughter named Yan Qing, courtesy name Ning'an. She grew up following her parents on military campaigns and became a skilled martial artist. She was also close with Huo Zheng, son of the Huo family, and Ling Zisheng, son of the Ling family.

Five years later, war broke out again. To help Emperor Wen consolidate his rule, Huo Chong rushed to defend Gucheng, while Mu Shanhe went to guard Shancheng (an original setting). Later, Gucheng fell, and the entire Huo family was wiped out, leaving only Huo Junhua and her child. The Mu couple also died in that battle. The Ling family was the only one left with survivors. After hearing the tragic news, the Mu family army guarded Shancheng while protecting their young general, who had yet to come of age.

A few years later, the long-dormant Mu family army rose to prominence. Its young commander always wore a green-faced, fanged mask, and no one had ever seen his face. The world only knew him as Young General Mu. As for which Mu he belonged to, everyone knew. After injuring his hand in a battle, he returned to the capital to recuperate, and Emperor Wen sent him to the academy, where he spent several years studying and shedding some of the bloodlust clinging to him.

A few years later, the young and renowned Mu Yanqing returned to the capital, joining forces with old friends to investigate the tragedy from years before.

“Of course. But what does that have to do with me?”

“You're a member of the Mu family, so you ought to take him as an example! I hear Young General Mu is brilliant, both in letters and in arms. He's truly admirable.”
