A salted fish who dreams of lying flat gets “tricked” by her own big brother into joining a hardcore farming variety show called Let’s Go Farming. Shi Yi, the much-loved “useless one” who ranks eleventh in her family, arrives in a countryside of wheat waving in the breeze with her last snacks and a sense of despair.
What awaits her is not a picturesque pastoral idyll, but a drafty warehouse dormitory, heavy, sharp farming tools, and ten nimble young people with “hardworking” written all over their faces: the Ten Most Diligent.
She goes from being unable to tell rice plants from weeds to awkwardly swinging a sickle, and from screaming in despair on the field ridge to learning to savor the peace of harvest beneath the stars. Shi Yi’s carefree salted-fish life is over, replaced by day after day of sweat and dirt, along with the concern of her “coldhearted, merciless, never-help-you” older siblings, which no distance can keep at bay.
When a cry of “Big Brother!!!!” rings across the fields in protest, and Jiang Dunhao, Lu Zhuo, Li Gengyun, and the others go from “taking care of their little sister” to truly seeing her as a partner in the work, a heartwarming summer story of growth and sweat unfolds in a blaze of glory amid golden waves of rice.
This is my first time writing. I’m a fan of the Ten Most Diligent as a group.
