Set in the late Southern Song Dynasty, the protagonist Qin Shuo is the son of a border herdsman. He has been with wolves since he was a child and learned the tenacity and resourcefulness of wolves. When the Mongolian cavalry went south, he witnessed the destruction of their homeland, and led the survivors to form the "Wolf Howling Army" to fight against powerful enemies with guerrilla warfare. In the blood and fire, he interpreted another aspect of "loyalty to the country" - not a loyal king in the temple, but a protector of the people far away in the rivers and lakes, and eventually became the "Wolf God" in the hearts of the border people.
