The 270-odd years of the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties were among the most chaotic and darkest periods in Chinese civilization, yet also among the most vibrant and tumultuous. They began with a power struggle within the imperial clan, the Rebellion of the Eight Princes, and ended with another, in the debauchery of Chen Shubao. Heroes and butchers coexisted, while romance and bloodshed intertwined. The northern peoples’ iron cavalry shattered the old order of the Central Plains, but in a crucible of blood and fire, they also forged a new and stronger Huaxia alongside Han culture.
