The Pancake Stall Owner’s Star Map

Synopsis for The Star Chart of the Pancake Stall Owner

At the end of the night market, Lin Wanqing spreads out steaming pancakes and catches falling sparks from the stars. With every pancake she makes, one star in the sky lights up; with every person she saves, her name fades from the household register. Chen Mo shields her from a knife with his flawless-looking mechanical arm, until the two discover that the coordinates of the Star-Devouring Clan's invasion today were recorded in 1943 by Wang Xiulian, who inscribed them in Miao silver and blood.

At three in the morning, the red agate mark on Lin Wanqing's skin burns beneath the lights. An unfamiliar constellation appears in the batter in her pan, and fine star positions emerge across the griddle. Using Miao silver ornaments as her guide, she calibrates the “Star Chart of the Mortal World” through heat, flipping, and spreading patterns, turning calamities into crisp pancakes and rising steam.

His name is Chen Mo. His right arm is a flawless-looking mechanical limb, yet it always “goes offline” at crucial moments. When the two trace the clues back to the handwritten records of Chen Mo's great-grandmother, Wang Xiulian, from 1943, they discover that the “star chart” is an anchor for a civilization's memory, and that the Star-Devouring Clan survives by consuming names and memories.
