[Famine era] [Lighthearted, with little angst] [Everyday life] [Low-key] [Twins] [No System] Transmigrating to 1962, Jiang Chen finds a pair of twin girls delivered to his door by the village chief from the start. Jiang Chen plans to use his knowledge, which is sixty years ahead of its time, to give his twin younger sisters a life where they can eat meat every day. But it turns out knowledge is the biggest trouble of all! He wants to solve their food shortage, so he turns wild kudzu roots that nobody wants into delicious food. But the whole village gets jealous, and every day someone climbs over his wall to spy on how he cooks it. Village loafer: “Jiang Chen must’ve found treasure in the mountains! Where else would he get all that white-flour porridge?” He wants to make life more comfortable, so he improves the stove to save firewood and keep the smoke down. But then someone reports him for dabbling in “crooked inventions” and having the wrong ideas. Brigade secretary, looking stern: “Comrade Jiang Chen, what sort of thing are you up to? Are you trying to set yourself apart from the people?” He wants to earn more work points, so he proposes a new composting method that could double productivity. But they accuse him of trying to engage in speculation and profiteering and of breaking the production team’s rules. Old farmer: “We’ve done it this way for generations. Who do you think you are, kid? Trying to slack off, are you?!” Jiang Chen looks at the twin sisters behind him, who depend on him more and more, then at the villagers’ jealous or suspicious stares, and feels a headache coming on. “I really... just want to live a little better!” (He throws his head back and cries out.)
