The Remarried Woman

Wafang Village is surrounded by mountains on three sides and borders the Yangbi River on the fourth. By the age of twenty-eight, Xifeng has endured two unhappy marriages. Her first husband, Aqiang, mysteriously drowned while rafting logs down the river. Her second drank, gambled, and chased women without a thought for his family, and their marriage ended in divorce. Brokenhearted, Xifeng only wants to raise her two children in peace, and vows never to marry again. But Zhao Yong, one of the village’s bachelors, sticks to her like a burr, quietly taking on every difficult task: repairing her leaky earthen home, ferrying mountain goods across the river, taking her children to and from school, and even defending her when villagers gossip about her. His steady warmth gradually melts Xifeng’s frozen heart, making her reconsider her vow to remain single. But just as their feelings begin to grow, a string of eerie events erupts in Wafang Village. In the middle of the night, the rafting chants Aqiang used to sing ring out from Xifeng’s home. An old, mud-splattered rain cape appears on the riverbank. The children cry that they have seen a “water ghost,” and the incense ash at the mountain god’s shrine gathers by itself to form the word “wronged.” The strange happenings leave the whole village in fear and raise questions about the circumstances of Aqiang’s death. For the sake of her children and home, and to learn the truth about her former husband’s death, Xifeng puts her fears aside and joins Zhao Yong in following the clues through the morning mists on the Yangbi River, the shadows of ancient banyan trees, and the smoke curling above the mountain god’s shrine. At last, they discover that Li Laowai from the village engineered Aqiang’s death to seize control of the riverside dock, and that his accomplices staged all the supernatural events. As Xifeng overcomes the pain of her past marriage, Zhao Yong earns her love and respect through his devotion. Facing hardship together, they reveal the truth and bring the guilty to justice, restoring peace to Wafang Village and finding happiness at last. My new work is here! Come read it on Fanqie Novel,
