In Spirit Beast City, a fantastical metropolis where steam and runes intertwine, humans and demons live side by side, and strange cases abound.
Hu Xiaoman, a descendant of the Qingqiu Fox Clan, calls himself a brilliant, dashing detective. In reality, he’s so broke he can’t even pay the rent. Before every case, he haggles first: “I’ll take the case, but it’ll cost extra!”
His team seems just as “unreliable”:
· Xiong Dali, a former police force elite and the northern bear clan’s muscle, is mainly responsible for bursting through walls while Hu Xiaoman is busy showing off, and using his entire salary to plug the holes in Hu Xiaoman’s debt-ridden finances.
· Bai Ling, a genius young cat who’s a tech nerd and sharp-tongued commentator, runs a café that never has any customers. She uses her hacking skills and wonder-working potions to turn Hu Xiaoman’s wild ideas into reality.
They take on all kinds of bizarre cases: dragon scales that vanish from a museum, strange mechanisms in a secluded mansion, a spatial maze aboard a ghost ship... Hu Xiaoman thinks all he’s earning is the reward money.
That is, until he discovers that every case points to the same vast, mysterious organization, the Shadow Merchant Guild, and an ancient treasure said to be capable of overturning the world: the “Hundred Chests of Divine Mechanisms.”
Now this enemy, hidden deep in the shadows of the city, has set its sights on the “inconvenient” fox. What worries him even more is that it all seems closely connected to his mother, who disappeared many years ago.
When greed, cowardice, and vanity become survival skills, and unreliability becomes the most reliable disguise, the hilarious case-solving adventures of Detective Hu Xiaoman begin, along with an epic tale of a hero protecting everything he holds dear!
