Her father is General Xiao, stationed on the border, named Xiao Zhihang. Her mother, Du Xueyin, is the Empress Dowager’s niece. Her elder brother, Xiao Feng, passed the imperial examinations and works at the Court of Judicial Review.

When the Little Swallow is eighteen, she and her brother return to the capital ahead of schedule after a great victory in the border war. Because the Little Swallow once saved a prince as a child, she is adopted as his daughter and officially named Princess Gulen Hexi, with Shufangzhai bestowed upon her. The restless Little Swallow wants to go sightseeing, so her brother brings her back to the capital early. They travel at a leisurely pace, stopping to explore along the way. Just after arriving in the capital, they meet the siblings Liu Qing and Liu Hong, and help them open the Huibin House so they can care for the old and young at the courtyard home.
