Paranormal Investigation Files: 1995

Hong Kong, 1995, battered by wind and rain. A string of bizarre murders in the tong lau buildings of Sham Shui Po gives rise to the Special Affairs Investigation Unit. Field team leader Chen Guozheng, a pragmatic police officer, leads the team alongside Lin Jingyi, a folklore professor at the University of Hong Kong and an expert in deciphering talismans; Xu Jiaming, a forensic pathologist specializing in pathological traces; and Zheng Yonghao, a forensic technician skilled in physical evidence. Together, they use the blade of science to cut through urban legends: the bleeding tears of a deity statue turn out to be radioactive lesions; the ageless crew of a ghost ship suffer from deep-sea pressure syndrome; and a fox spirit’s face-slicing is caused by titanium alloy bone pins interfering with the brain’s nerves. But when they encounter paper figures walking in defiance of physical laws, fingerprints reappearing after forty years, and an ancient Guizang formation emerging on a nautical chart, the wall of reason begins to crack. Across twenty cases, they travel between the Wong Tai Sin Temple and Kowloon Walled City, catching a glimpse of light at the very edge of science.
