When Lin Chen opened his eyes with a severe headache, the world outside the window was shrouded in a strange scarlet color.
Raindrops hit the glass intensively, forming a meandering blood-red stream that slowly dripped along the window edge. The air was filled with a sweet smell like rust, mixed with an indescribable sense of decay, which made him cover his mouth and nose subconsciously.
"What the hell kind of weather is this?" He struggled to sit up and found that he was lying on the floor of the rental house instead of the familiar bed. The memory of working overtime until late last night still lingered in his mind, and he clearly remembered falling asleep on his desk.
The phone screen lit up in the darkness, causing him to squint his eyes. There was no signal, and the time in the upper right corner stayed at 3:17 in the morning, but the date showed a number that had never been seen before - the first day of the New Year.
"Prank?" Lin Chen frowned and picked up the phone. When his fingertips touched the screen, he felt a chill. He tried to dial the emergency number, but the receiver only received a continuous busy tone, as if mocking his futility.
Suddenly there was a shrill scream from next door, followed by the muffled sound of a heavy object falling to the ground, and then there was dead silence.
Lin Chen's heart suddenly shrank. He held his breath and listened. There was a faint sound of shuffling footsteps in the corridor, like someone walking with soaked shoes, accompanied by a heart-wrenching sound of nails scraping against the wall.
