In the late years of the Republic of China, Gao Shiwei and Lin Hongying separated due to the Japanese invasion of China. The husband resolutely joined the army to fight against Japan, and then retreated to Taiwan with the army. He was homesick all his life; the wife stayed alone in her hometown, cared for her orphans in troubled times, and waited patiently. After facing each other across the sea for forty years, the torrent of time has shattered the hope of reunion several times. Until the two sides of the Taiwan Strait thawed, the white-haired returnee finally embraced his wife who had been waiting for him all his life in front of the old house.
