Lin Yan, a collateral descendant of Suzhou and Hangzhou's famous brocade-weaving families, is assigned to guard the Ancient Brocade Pavilion after being deemed to have no talent for weaving. But when a weaving demon from the Illusion Realm attacks, he unexpectedly awakens Jin Yao, a brocade spirit who has slept for a thousand years. Though he cannot draw in ordinary spiritual energy, he possesses an unparalleled gift for sensing the spiritual essence of intangible cultural heritage. From the patterns in brocade, he can read the history of sericulture through the ages; from the glaze on porcelain, he can touch the soul of the kilns of the Tang and Song dynasties.
When the spiritual veins in Jingdezhen's porcelain patterns are corrupted by a cracked-porcelain gu beast, the formation core in Huizhou's woodcarvings is destroyed by a mute opera demon, and the sound-pattern barrier of Kunqu opera nears collapse, Lin Yan and Jin Yao embark on a journey across the Nine Provinces in search of art. Together with Su Qingci, the porcelain maiden of Jingdezhen, he fires “spirit-infused celadon”; with the woodcarving spirit lord of Huizhou, he restores an ancient carved screen. Using “brocade as a shield, porcelain as a blade, and woodcarving as a formation,” he turns traditional crafts into weapons against the Illusion Realm.
From the sacred heritage sites of the Human Realm to the Hall of the Hundred Arts in the Spirit Realm, and then to the Abyss of Lost Arts in the Illusion Realm, Lin Yan gradually comes to understand that preserving the arts means more than preserving techniques. It means safeguarding the roots of a thousand-year-old culture, letting the threads of brocade, the earth of porcelain, and the wood of carvings burn bright enough to illuminate all three realms. This is a cross-species quest to protect their world, and a tribute to traditional crafts across the three realms.
