A Sequel to Dream of the Red Chamber: The Record of the Remnant Monk’s Return to the Stone

This sequel picks up immediately after the first eighty chapters by Cao Xueqin, focusing on Baoyu’s fall and awakening after the Jia family’s downfall. The once-beloved young master of the Garden of Crimson Delights becomes a prisoner. He endures the family’s confiscation, the separation of friends and relatives, and the harshness of a changed world. It unfolds in detail the devastating process of “a great mansion collapsing in an instant” and the final outcome of “a vast, blank land, clean and clear.” It explores the inevitability of fate and the individual’s struggle against it, the illusory nature of love and spiritual liberation, the decline of the aristocracy, and the light of human nature in desperate circumstances. It is both a tragic family saga and the spiritual epic of a “stubborn stone” completing its final trials in the human world and ultimately achieving enlightenment.
